ScienceCast Flowering Plants and Ancient Gene Duplications

Example of large scale gene duplication in plants.

The terms homologue, orthologue, and paralogue are often used as synonyms in scientific literature.  While all three terms refer to the evolutionary history of a gene, orthologue and paralogue genes differ based on whether they are produced due to speciation events or duplication events.  In this section, paralogue genes are discussed.

What is a paralogue gene?

A paralogue gene is a gene that occurs after a duplication event.
